ChargePoint has deployed an overhead electric vehicle fast-charging system at Portland International Airport (PDX) to support rental car fleet operations.
Located in the airport's Quick Turnaround (QTA) Facility, the installation includes 10 dual-port fast-charging dispensers mounted overhead with retractable cable management. The system allows up to 20 vehicles to be connected simultaneously.
Mounting the charging equipment overhead reduces the amount of equipment located at ground level and is intended to protect chargers from potential vehicle damage. The configuration also reduces conduit and wiring requirements during installation, according to the Port of Portland.
Rental car operators can use the chargers between rentals to prepare EVs for subsequent customers.
"Projects like PDX demonstrate how charging infrastructure can support sustainability goals while delivering measurable business value," said Jeremiah Hartley, airport rental car manager at Portland International Airport. "The overhead charging system enabled us to save on installation costs by limiting the conduit and wiring needed and helps protect against potential damage caused by vehicles in the QTA."
Managing Rental Fleet Charging
The installation also uses ChargePoint's fleet management software, which provides operators with remote monitoring, troubleshooting and charging management capabilities.
The software allows operators to monitor charging activity and adjust charging based on fleet operating requirements.
"As rental fleet operators add electric vehicles to their fleets, airports face the challenge of delivering reliable, high-power charging infrastructure at scale," said Rick Wilmer, CEO of ChargePoint. "The Port of Portland's investment at PDX demonstrates how fast charging can integrate into existing parking lots without sacrifices for equipment placement."
The PDX installation provides another configuration for airports and rental fleet operators evaluating how to incorporate EV charging infrastructure into existing vehicle turnaround facilities.
