A prototype of Ford Motor Co.'s battery-electric F-150 was able to tow more than 1 million pounds during testing, the company has announced.

The specially equipped F-150 towed 10 double-decker freight cars for 1,000 feet. The vehicle, which was driven by the F-150's chief engineer Linda Zhang, towed the rail cars unloaded at first. The battery-electric F-150 then towed the cars that were loaded with 42 F-150s from earlier models years.

With the rail cars loaded, the F-150 was towing 1.25 million pounds, Zhang said. Ford plans to offer a production version of the truck "in the coming years," Zhang said.
