The all-new 2027 Mitsubishi Eclipse Sportback has been named Green Car Journal’s 2027 Green SUV of the Year.

The annual award recognizes SUVs based on environmental performance as well as factors including functionality and versatility. The Eclipse Sportback is a new battery-electric vehicle that will join Mitsubishi’s U.S. lineup as part of the automaker’s Momentum 2030 business plan.

"The Eclipse Sportback EV is a strategic addition to the Mitsubishi lineup and a deserving winner of 2027 Green SUV of the Year," said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and GreenCarJournal.com. "At a time when some others are scaling back, Mitsubishi is expanding its electrified choices with mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and now battery-electric models."

The award follows previous recognition for Mitsubishi’s Outlander Plug-in Hybrid. The model received Green Car Journal’s Family Green Car of the Year award in 2019 and from 2023 through 2026. For 2026, the Outlander PHEV shared the award with the Outlander mild hybrid.

Eclipse Sportback Adds Battery-Electric Option

The Eclipse Sportback will expand Mitsubishi’s electrified U.S. lineup alongside the mild-hybrid Outlander and Outlander Plug-in Hybrid.

The new EV features a J1772 connection for Level 1 and Level 2 charging. According to Mitsubishi, Level 2 charging can take the battery from 20% to 80% in approximately 6.5 hours.

The Eclipse Sportback also offers North American Charging System compatibility, providing access to compatible Tesla Supercharger locations.

DC fast-charging capability reaches up to 150 kW, with Mitsubishi estimating a 10% to 80% charge in approximately 35 minutes. Charging times can vary depending on factors including the power source, ambient and battery temperatures, battery condition and accessory use.

Mitsubishi’s Momentum 2030 business plan calls for the automaker to expand electrification across its lineup and introduce new or updated vehicles annually through 2030.
