Volvo Driver Sensing System Aims to Reduce Distracted, Drowsy Driving Crashes
Volvo Unveils the Electric EX90 SUV
Volvo's new fully electric SUV is billed as a "computer on wheels" and comes with advanced safety features. The 2024 model is now available for pre-order and will be available for under $80,000.

Volvo's new flagship all-electric SUV, the EX90, was revealed in a livestreamed event around the world in Stockholm today. The brand said the vehicle represents the start of a new era for the company as it charts a fully electric future.
Volvo describes its EX90 as a stylish car with modern proportions, combined with cutting-edge technology in core computing, connectivity, and electrification.
“The Volvo EX90 is a statement for where we are, and where we are going,” said Jim Rowan, Volvo chief executive. “It’s fully electric with a range of up to 300 miles on a single charge, designed to further raise our safety standards, the first Volvo car to be truly defined by its software and part of a wider ecosystem, connecting to your home and your other devices. The Volvo EX90 is the start of something new for Volvo Cars in many ways.”
EX90 Range
With its new fully electric technology base, the Volvo EX90 is expected to deliver up to 300 miles of emission-free driving range on a single charge. It charges from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes.

The Volvo EX90 will support Plug and Charge, which when available, means drivers can plug the car into a public charger that supports the technology, and it will start charging automatically, including taking payment.

The initially available twin-motor all-wheel drive version is powered by a 111kWh battery and two permanent magnet electric motors together delivering in its performance version 370 kW (496 hp) and 671 lb. ft. of torque. In combination with the brand new chassis, this creates a smooth driving experience.
The Volvo EX90 contains approximately 15% recycled steel, 25% recycled aluminum, and over 105 pounds of recycled plastics and bio-based materials, which equals around 15% of the total plastic used in the car – the highest of any Volvo car yet, according to the announcement.
The EX90 is Volvo's first car with all necessary hardware to enable bi-directional charging. This technology means you can use your car battery as an extra energy supply to power your home, other electric devices, or another electric car. The company plans to make bi-directional charging available in the future, starting with selected markets.
EX90 Safety Features
According to the company, the standard safety in the Volvo EX90 is higher than any Volvo car before. It’s designed to understand the driver and its surroundings, and can become smarter and safer over time as it learns from new data and receives updates.
The Volvo EX90 uses the latest sensing technology inside and outside. Cameras, radars, and lidar are connected to the car’s core computers, where NVIDIA DRIVE runs Volvo Cars’ in-house software to create a real-time, 360-degree view of the world, the company said.
The sensors are designed to respond and react when the driver is just a fraction too late. The lidar can sense the road day or night, and at highway speeds, detecting small objects hundreds of meters ahead. This contributes to its assisted driving function Pilot Assist, with a new steering support while changing lanes.
Inside, special sensors and cameras gauge eye gaze concentration, allowing the vehicle to understand when you’re distracted, drowsy, or inattentive. It’ll alert the driver, and if needed, safely stop and call for help.
EX90 Technology
The vehicle's 14.5-inch center screen and infotainment system comes with Google built-in. Apps and services include hands-free help, maps navigation, and apps on Google Play. The display in the Volvo EX90 will help keep eyes on the road by offering the right information at the right time, the company said. The Volvo EX90 will also be compatible with wireless Apple CarPlay.
The EX90 will also come with phone key technology as standard. A smartphone serves as the car key and automatically unlocks the car and starts a welcoming sequence as the driver approaches. A personal profile will be loaded automatically upon entry to the car.
Other Vehicle Details
The 2024 Volvo EX90 is now available for pre-order in the United States. The Volvo EX90 will be available at under $80,000. Customers placing pre-orders will be asked to configure their cars in fall 2023 and will receive prioritization when deliveries begin in early 2024. All Americas-bound Volvo EX90 models are expected to be built at the brand's plant in Charleston, South Carolina.
The EX90 will be built in the U.S. starting next year and later in China.
Starting with the EX90, Volvo will reveal one new fully electric car each year. By 2030, the OEM aims to sell only fully electric cars in its goal to be a climate-neutral company by 2040.
Editor's note: The Volvo EX90 will see first deliveries in Q4 2024. Volvo has updated its electrification targets and will continue to sell vehicles with internal combustion engines through 2030 and beyond.
