Hyundai had three models recognized in the recent U.S. News & World Report 2026 Best Hybrid and Electric Cars rankings.
The Tucson Hybrid was named Best Compact Hybrid SUV, and the IONIQ 5 was named Best Compact Electric SUV, each earning the recognition for the third consecutive year. The IONIQ 9 was named Best Midsize Electric SUV.
The awards evaluate vehicles based on a combination of quality, efficiency, and value across multiple segments.
Sales Trends and Powertrain Details
Hyundai reported that hybrid and electric vehicle sales increased by 50% in March and by 61% for the first quarter, reflecting continued consumer interest in electrified powertrains.
The Tucson Hybrid is Hyundai’s top-selling model. Its hybrid system pairs a 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine producing 178 horsepower and 195 lb.-ft. of torque with a 47.7-kW electric motor and a 1.49-kWh lithium-ion battery. Combined system output is estimated at 231 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. Power is delivered through a six-speed automatic transmission. The system also includes driver-adjustable regenerative braking.

Electric SUV Specifications
The IONIQ 5 is a battery-electric SUV with an 800-volt architecture supporting DC fast charging up to 350 kW. It offers a combination of range, efficiency, and standard safety features for the segment.
The IONIQ 9 is a three-row electric SUV with seating for up to seven passengers and an EPA-estimated driving range of up to 335 miles. The model is produced at Hyundai Motor Group’s Metaplant in Georgia alongside the IONIQ 5.
U.S. News said the rankings are intended to help consumers evaluate hybrid and electric vehicles as fuel costs and model availability continue to influence purchasing decisions.
