Rivian Automotive Inc. and Uber Technologies Inc. are partnering to advance autonomous vehicles, with plans to deploy 10,000 fully autonomous R2 robotaxis in the first phase.
Deployments are expected to begin in San Francisco and Miami in 2028, with expansion to 25 cities by 2031.
Uber plans to invest up to $1.25 billion in Rivian through 2031, contingent on achieving specific autonomous development milestones. An initial $300 million investment is expected following regulatory approval.
If milestones are met, the companies plan to deploy thousands of unsupervised Rivian R2 robotaxis across 25 cities in the U.S., Canada, and Europe by the end of 2031. The agreement also includes an option to negotiate the purchase of up to 40,000 additional R2 vehicles beginning in 2030.
Autonomy Platform and Technology Development
Rivian said its third-generation autonomy platform, announced in December 2025, is expected to be integrated into the R2 vehicle when it launches in late 2026.
The platform includes a sensor suite with 11 cameras, five radars, and one LiDAR unit, along with Rivian’s in-house RAP1 chips, capable of 1,600 trillion operations per second of AI compute performance.
“This partnership with Uber supports our path toward level 4 autonomy,” said RJ Scaringe, founder and CEO of Rivian, in a March 19 news release.
“We believe Rivian’s approach to integrating vehicle design, software, and manufacturing supports scalable autonomous fleet development,” said Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber.
The companies said the partnership intends to create an autonomous mobility platform integrated with Uber’s ridehail network.
