Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) claimed the top spot in all but one category in the 2022 World Car of the Year Awards with the Hyundai IONIQ 5 model sweeping three awards: World Car of the Year, Electric Vehicle of the Year and Design Car of the year.

The Mercedes Benz EQS was named the Luxury Car of the Year, and Audi’s e-tron GT received the Performance Car of the Year award. Toyota’s hybrid-electric model, the Yaris Cross, captured the Urban Car of the year designation.

The Mercedes Benz EQS and Audi e-tron GT were also finalists for the Electric Vehicle award. The two other finalists for World Car of the Year were also BEVs: the Kia EV6 and the Ford Mustang Mach-e.

Unveiled at the recent New York International Auto Show, the awards were selected by a jury of 82 international automotive journalists from 24 countries. Eligible cars must be sold in at least five countries, on at least two continents prior to 1 January of the award year. This year’s awards are the 18th in the program’s history.
