Volvo Trucks’ global heavy-duty electric range has been named International Truck of the Year 2027, marking the manufacturer’s eighth win of the award and the second involving the Volvo FH Electric.

For North American fleets, the award recognizes the broader electric truck program behind the Volvo VNR Electric, which has been operating in the United States and Canada since 2020.

“The Volvo Trucks winning range represents a major evolution of their battery-electric heavy-duty offering,” said Florian Engel, chairman of International Truck of the Year. “With the new electric range, the company demonstrates how quickly battery-electric heavy-duty transport is moving from individual applications towards a comprehensive transport solution.”

The award was presented Sept. 14 during IAA Transportation in Hanover, Germany.

Longer Range for Volvo’s Global Electric Trucks

The award-winning lineup includes the Volvo FH Electric with extended range and the next-generation FH, FM and FMX Electric.

The FH Aero Electric with extended range offers up to approximately 435 miles per charge, while the FH, FM and FMX Electric offer up to approximately 290 miles. Volvo said the new models also offer increased payload capacity and shorter charging times compared with the previous generation.

The International Truck of the Year jury cited the trucks’ longer range, range of cab and chassis configurations and ability to be configured for applications including regional and long-haul transportation, city distribution, construction and utility operations.

North American Fleets Approach 37 Million Electric Miles

Volvo Trucks said more than 750 VNR Electric trucks are operating across the United States and Canada and have accumulated nearly 37 million zero-tailpipe-emission miles.

Those vehicles are supported by 84 Volvo Trucks Certified EV Dealership locations across 33 states and four Canadian provinces. Volvo certified its first EV dealership in 2021.

“Volvo Trucks has seven years of electric truck experience across more than 50 countries, and that global scale works to our North American customers’ advantage,” said Peter Voorhoeve, president of Volvo Trucks North America. “Fleets here have logged nearly 37 million zero-tailpipe emission miles, and we are continuing to develop both our electric offering and the support network behind it.”

Globally, more than 7,000 Volvo electric trucks have accumulated more than 310 million miles since 2019, according to the company. Nearly 2,000 customers in more than 50 countries operate the trucks.

Volvo Trucks North America also works with fleets on route and duty-cycle analysis, charging infrastructure, financing and service as part of electric truck deployments.

VNR Electric Builds North American Operating Experience

Volvo commercialized the VNR Electric in North America in 2020 and began serial production later that year. A next-generation model followed in 2022 with additional range and configurations.

The VNR Electric has since been deployed in applications including drayage, local and regional distribution, pickup and delivery, and food and beverage operations.

Volvo is also developing the VNL Electric, which was previewed in May 2026. It is planned as the fourth truck on Volvo’s new North American platform, joining the all-new VNL, all-new VNR and upcoming VNX vocational model.

The VNL Electric is being developed for applications including regional haul, drayage and city distribution.
