Toyota has updated the 2027 Prius with new comfort features, additional exterior color options and the latest version of its fifth-generation Toyota Hybrid System (THS 5).

The hybrid sedan is available in LE, XLE, Nightshade and Limited grades and continues to offer front-wheel-drive (FWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) configurations.

Hybrid Powertrain

The 2027 Prius is powered by Toyota's fifth-generation hybrid system, pairing a 2.0-liter four-cylinder DOHC engine with electric motors.

FWD models produce 194 net-combined horsepower, with Toyota estimating a 0-60 mph time of 7.2 seconds and up to 55 mpg combined in the LE grade.

AWD models increase output to 196 net-combined horsepower, with an estimated 0-60 mph time of 7.0 seconds and up to 53 mpg combined for the LE AWD.

The THS 5 system combines the gasoline engine with two motor-generators through a continuously variable transmission to charge a lithium-ion battery. An Electronically Controlled Brake system coordinates regenerative and hydraulic braking to recover electrical energy.

For low-speed operation over short distances, such as parking garages, a selectable EV Mode allows electric-only driving and incorporates a Vehicle Proximity Notification system designed to alert pedestrians.

Available All-Wheel Drive

Electronic On-Demand AWD models use a rear-mounted Interior Permanent Magnet electric motor.

Using wheel-speed and G-force sensor data, the system distributes torque to the rear wheels when needed to reduce front-wheel slip during acceleration, reduce understeer and improve traction on slippery surfaces.

Drive Modes

Drivers can choose between three selectable drive modes:

• Normal balances fuel economy and acceleration.
• Eco adjusts hybrid system output in response to accelerator input.
• Sport increases throttle response.

Driver Comfort and Connectivity

New for 2027 is dual-zone HVAC, allowing the driver and front passenger to select independent temperature settings.

The Prius includes an 8-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia display on LE, XLE and Nightshade models, while Limited models receive a standard 12.3-inch touchscreen. The larger display is also available on the Nightshade grade.

The multimedia system supports over-the-air updates.

LE, XLE and Nightshade models include a six-speaker audio system, while Limited models feature an eight-speaker JBL Premium Audio system with Clari-Fi technology.

Toyota also includes five-year trials of Safety Connect, Service Connect and Remote Connect, along with a 30-day/3 GB Wi-Fi Connect trial. Additional Drive Connect services may be available depending on trim. (4G network dependent.)
