Hyundai's 2019 Nexo hydrogen-powered midsize SUV has earned a Top Safety Pick+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for vehicles built after June, the institute has announced.

The Nexo is Hyundai's newest hydrogen fuel cell vehicle that's now only available in California. It was the first such vehicle tested by the institute at the request of Hyundai.

The Nexo earned good ratings in the institute's six crash tests, including driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests. The vehicle's standard front crash prevention system earned a superior rating, because it avoided collisions at 12 mph and 25 mph. It's forward collision warning system meets criteria of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Nexo's only available headlights earned a good rating for models built after June, because Hyundai adjusted the factory aim to provide better visibility, especially through curves.
