Vauxhall/Opel has launched its new compact Astra model, with sales of a fully electric version to commence in 2023.
This is the eighth-generation Astra and the first time the Stellantis brand will have EV representation in this class. The new Astra-e joins the Vauxhall all-electric line-up alongside Corsa-e, Mokka-e, Combo-e Life and Vivaro-e Life, as well as an already fully-electric light commercial vehicle line-up of Combo-e, Vivaro-e and Movano-e.
Vauxhalll says that by 2028 its range will be fully electric ahead of the UK government’s 2030 ban on the sale of petrol or diesel only engined new cars.
Until the electric Astra is available, fleets will have the low taxation choice of a plug-in hybrid variant that offers up to 35 miles driven in zero emission mode. Vauxhall says overall emissions are as low as 24g/km. Electric and plug-in hybrid models have low ‘benefit-in-kind’ taxation levels, particularly attractive to fleets and fleet drivers for their lower costs, the government using tax incentives for drivers to choose zero emission or ultra low emission vehicles.
Traditional petrol and diesel engined variants will also be available.
The new Astra features the ‘Vizor’ face of new Vauxhall/Opel models while the interior features a fully digital Pure Panel dashboard and driver information area.
Commenting on the new car, Mark Adams, VP design Vauxhall, said:
“The All-New Astra represents the exciting next step of our new design execution. With its bold Vizor front face, strong muscular wheel arch blisters and sheer surfacing, the All-New Astra has a very sporty and confident personality. The interior also takes a bold step into the future. The strong driver-orientated cockpit with seamless glass look of the new Pure Panel will bring a whole new emotional experience to our customers.”
Fleet customers will be able to order the new Astra from the Fall, when full pricing will be announced. First deliveries will be early 2021.
