The city of Los Angeles may require rideshare services like Uber and Lyft to use electric vehicles, according to a report by the Financial Times. This would be the first mandate for electric vehicles for ridesharing companies in any U.S. city.
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti told the Financial Times that this is one step being considered to help cut the city’s greenhouse gas emissions.
“We have the power to regulate carshare,” he said. “We can mandate, and are looking closely at mandating, that any of those vehicles in the future be electric.”
The city of LA’s plan also entails buying more electric buses and electric vehicles for the city’s municipal fleet, including an electric fire engine, according to the report.
A policy to require electric vehicles would alter the rideshare business, since drivers own or rent their own vehicles and electric vehicles are typically more expensive.
Currently, California’s rideshare services are regulated by the state’s Public Utilities Commission.
Uber declined to comment for the story.
