GM Invests In Workforce At Plant That Builds Chevy Bolt EVs
GM’s Fairfax Assembly Plant highlights how workforce and manufacturing improvements support the next phase of EV and vehicle production.

General Motors’ Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Kansas, has operated since 1946 and is now supporting the company’s next phase of manufacturing.
The plant produces the Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle and will soon add the gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox, followed by a next-generation Buick compact SUV.
In addition to nearly $5.5 billion in recent manufacturing investments, GM is committing an additional $30 million to workforce training at Fairfax to support upcoming vehicle launches and advanced manufacturing processes.
The $30 million investment is focused on preparing employees for new production demands and evolving technologies. Training initiatives include:
Upskilling team members for advanced manufacturing roles
Cross-training employees to support both electric and internal combustion vehicle production
Safety, quality, and launch-readiness training tied to new vehicle programs
A Generational Plant
Fairfax has long been a multigenerational employer, with many employees building careers alongside family members. Plant Director Michael Youngs, a third-generation GM employee, began his career at Fairfax more than 30 years ago and now oversees multiple vehicle launches at the facility.
“For many of us, this plant represents a long-term commitment,” Youngs said in a Jan. 29 news release. “Investing in training helps ensure employees are prepared for new vehicles and new technologies.”
Part of a Broader Workforce Strategy
Training at Fairfax is part of GM’s broader workforce development strategy, which spans early education, apprenticeships, and advanced technical training.

Across the company, GM has:
Invested $500 million in U.S. manufacturing apprenticeships and upskilling programs over the past five years
Trained about 2,500 employees annually in advanced manufacturing, electrification, and emerging technologies at its Technical Learning University in Warren, Michigan
Provided up to $8,000 per year in tuition assistance, totaling $66 million in higher education support over the past five years
As Fairfax transitions production from the Bolt to the Equinox and adds the Buick compact SUV, these programs are intended to ensure employees are prepared for each launch.
Investing in Long-Term Competitiveness
GM’s decision to expand production at Fairfax reflects a focus on workforce readiness as a component of long-term manufacturing competitiveness.
The Fairfax-specific training investment is intended to:
Support employee skill development and career growth
Strengthen a key U.S. manufacturing facility
Improve production flexibility and quality as vehicle programs change
