More competitive pricing and consumer reluctance are taking their toll on the automaker's ambitious electrification plans.
The new campus – to be renamed Oakville Electric Vehicle Complex – will be a high-volume manufacturing hub for North America, producing about two million EVs annually by 2026.
Called Blue Oval City, the complex will be constructed on a nearly six-square-mile site in west Tennessee and produce next-generation electric F-Series pickups and advanced batteries.
With 150,000 reservations and counting, the additional resources will boost the supply of the all-electric pickup truck when it goes on sale in the spring of 2022.
The BMW iX is being manufactured at the BMW Group’s largest European production plant on an assembly line with the flexibility to build a mix of BMW 5 Series, 7 Series, and 8 Series models.
BMW Group is expanding it manufacturing capacity to make electric drivetrains for 500,000 electrified vehicles per year from 2022 and start producing fifth-generation high-voltage batteries.
