Charged Fleet

Fleet FAQ

Fleet Electrification: What do you want to know?

Q. What should I know about employees charging at home?

A. Allowing employees to take a company EV home has many benefits, for both the individual and company. It is more convenient, as it reduces unnecessary trips back to the fleet yard and it helps ensure that vehicles are charged for the following day. It can also be more cost-effective since it can reduce the amount of on-site infrastructure required and employees might be able to take advantage of cheaper overnight electricity rates.

You will need to determine how to reimburse your employees both for the installation of the charging station and its use. The former should be fairly straightforward but separating out how much electricity was used for charging can be challenging. You can install a submeter or a networked charging station, but your telematics solution might be the most cost effective choice.

When looking for rebates on charging equipment it is important to look at all levels of government: federal, state and municipal. You may also want to contact your electric utility company for any additional incentives or programs. Regardless, you should always read the terms and conditions of any incentive to make sure it applies to your organization.

Finally, it is important to be aware that not everyone has access to a home charging station, particularly people living in a condo, apartment or other rental property. In those cases, telematics approaches may help simplify the process of reimbursing employees for charging their company vehicles.
